Nominations close for February's Banks Peninsula elections
Two candidates have been nominated for the new Christchurch City Council seat created by the decision to merge Banks Peninsula into the city and 16 nominations have been received for the 10 community board seats to be contested in an election next month.
The nominations period closed today, says Christchurch City Council electoral officer Max Robertson. Voters can expect to get their ballot papers in the mail between 3 and 8 February. They must be returned by midday on Saturday, 25 February.
In a November ballot, Peninsula electors voted six-to-four in favour of a Local Government Commission (LGC) scheme to abolish their district and have it become part of Christchurch City.
That result triggered the need for another postal ballot, which will close on 25 February, to elect a 13th City Councillor from the new Banks Peninsula Ward and two new community boards, each of five elected members. The November decision also meant the Minister of Local Government began arranging for the implementation of the Local Government Commission's reorganisation scheme by Order in Council.
The Banks Peninsula District Council will be dissolved, and the Banks Peninsula District abolished, the day after Mr Robertson declares the results of the 25 February election results.
Mr Robertson says no election is needed for the three Akaroa positions on the Akaroa-Wairewa Community Board because there were only three nominations. By public notice next week he will officially declare Steve Lowndes, Winston McKean and Eric Ryder elected to that board.
The nominees for the City Council seat are Bob Parker and Tony Utteridge.
The nominees for the five Lyttelton-Mount Herbert Community Board positions are: Raymond Adams, Jeremy Agar, Stuart Bould, Douglas Couch, Euan Godfrey, Lachie Griffen, Ann Jolliffe, Dawn Te-Riaki Kottier, Kirsty MacNab and Claudia Reid.
The nominees for the two Wairewa positions on the Akaroa-Wairewa Community Board are: Stewart Miller, Bryan Morgan and Esther Phillips.
