$100,000 allocated for crime prevention projects in Manukau communities

Council’s Community Safety Committee today approved funding of $100,000 for community focused crime prevention projects across Manukau.

The 10 successful projects reflect a wide range of initiatives, each targeting different types of crime, criminals and their victims.

The funding includes:

- $25,000 to the Mangere Genesis Youth Project Trust towards employing a youth worker. Council has also committed to help the trust gain alternative sustainable funding for their programme into the future.

- $10,900 to Rape Crisis Auckland for a rape prevention education programme for Manurewa and Papatoetoe high schools.

- $14,000 to New Zealand Police for five mountain bikes to help increase Police visibility in the Eastern Police Area (Howick and Otara), in line with Tomorrow’s Manukau safer communities outcomes.

- $19,500 to Victim Support Counties Manukau towards the salary for a service coordinator.

Cr Dick Quax, Chair of the Community Safety Committee says:

“We’re extremely pleased to be able to provide targeted funding for grass roots crime prevention projects and support those people who work hard to make our communities a safer and more pleasant place to live. These funds will help make a real difference to communities across Manukau.”

The funding for community crime prevention initiatives is awarded from the Community Crime Prevention Fund ($80,000) and the Tomorrow’s Manukau Safe Communities Outcome group ($20, 000) as part of the 2005/6 Annual Plan.
