Saddle Up For The Pencarrow Coast Family Mountain Bike Ride

It’s time to pump up the tyres, grease the chain and get out-and-about on two wheels to enjoy the fresh air and scenic views with the Pencarrow Coast Family Mountain Bike Ride on Sunday 9 April.

The 18km return ride promises exercise and lots of fun of all ages. The route winds its way from Burden’s Gate in Eastbourne, along the gravel track next to the harbour to the historic Pencarrow lighthouse and then on to the true shores of Cook Strait‘s rugged windswept coast and Lake Kohangatera. Keen cyclists can continue to on to the shipwreck of the steamer Paiaka if desired.

Taken at a leisurely pace, the ride should take families with children about two to three hours to complete, dependent on ability and number of stops. Drink stations and a portable toilet will be placed along the route for participants’ convenience.

While the ride itself is free to all, cyclists should register in advance by calling Leisure Active or by visiting http://www.huttcity.info/bikeride or by picking up an entry from Avanti Plus, 40 Bloomfield Terrace, Lower Hutt. FREE bike safety checks are also available at Avanti Plus prior to the event.

Spot prizes are up for grab including a chance to win an Avanti Blackthunder mountain bike valued at over $500.

Under-14s must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 years or older (1 adult to 3 children). All cyclists must wear an approved cycle helmet and mountain bikes are recommended.

So pack your picnics, put on your helmets and join us at Burden’s Gate, end of Muritai Road, Eastbourne at 11:00am on Sunday 9 April. On the day registrations open at 10:00am.

The ride will take place wet or fine, unless the weather is extreme. For cancellations listen to Newstalk ZB (1035am).
