To celebrate the rising of Matariki and Te Wiki o te Reo (Māori Language Week 24 – 30 July), Auckland City Libraries is holding an exhibition called ‘Pūaoaotanga’ or ‘rising dawn’ at the Central City Library from 3 – 31 July.

The exhibition encompasses the many different aspects of Matariki which signifies the Māori New Year and Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - a celebration of the indigenous language of Aotearoa.

Anahera Morehu, Kai Ārahi at Auckland City Libraries, says:

“Te wiki o te reo Māori allows us to explore and celebrate not only the Māori language but also our relationship and influence of the environment on our language. “

The exhibition celebrates ngā reo, the many voices from the environment and how they play a major part in te Ao Māori. The Pūaoaotanga exhibition illustrates these voices which form an orchestration of symbolic harmonies presented through Te Uhi Mataora (the voices of traditional tattooing), Rau Whakairo (the voices of carving), Tuhi Māreikura (the voices of man), and Ngā Manu Korokī (the voices of the birds).

The exhibition utilises the unique Heritage collections such as Māori manuscripts, lithographs, photographs, and oral histories housed within Tāmaki Pātaka Kōrero – Auckland City Libraries.
