Wairarapa flood event – update no. 3

Greater Wellington staff is closely monitoring river levels following widespread flooding throughout Wairarapa since last night, particularly in south eastern areas. Civil Defence centres have been activated in South Wairarapa and Masterton. Local councils are continuously assessing roads. The public are advised to contact their local district council office for more detailed information on road closures. Information is also available online at www.wrcdemg.govt.nz

In Masterton district many roads are still closed especially in rural areas due to slips and flooded streams. Some houses are affected due to sewage contaminated stream waters.

In Carterton district there is surface flooding in several places and several road closures. One house has been evacuated due to sewage contamination.

In South Wairarapa district four houses close to the Rumahanga River have been self-evacuated.

Drivers are urged to take extreme care on all roads and to drive to conditions.

The Huangarua River is at a level of 4.4 metres. The Ruamahanga River at Martinborough is slowly rising and is at a level of 5.03 metres. It is not expected to peak until late evening. The Lower Valley floodways are all operational.

The latest MetService report predicts 10-12mm per hour for the next 2 to 3 hours in the hills from midday today.

In the 6 to 8 hours from 8am today a further 30 to 50mm possible in lower lying parts of the Wairarapa Plains, while 80mm is possible in the hills and ranges with intensities of 5 to 10mm per hour. From late afternoon further rain is still expected but of lower intensity, adding another 20mm about the hills.

A further release will be issued at 4.30pm.
