Twins Deaths To Be Referred To Coroner

New Zealand Police National News

14 August 2006

Porirua Police say the deaths of three-month-old twin baby girls in Titahi Bay yesterday will be referred to the coroner.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Oxnam, Porirua CIB, says postmortems were held last night on Sapphire Joyce Steel and Serenity Aroha Steel.

"There was no sign of trauma or injury and the cause of death will be determined by the coroner."

Detective Senior Sergeant Oxnam says the babies were "loved and cherished" by their family and the deaths were very sad and distressing for everyone.

Police are making inquiries on behalf of the coroner, and expect to finish their scene examination today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Oxnam appealed for media to give the family privacy and space to grieve.
