Sanctuary raises over $6,000 in
silver
Wellington’s Karori Wildlife Sanctuary is
delighted to announce its Coins for Conservation Appeal,
which culminated in a family event on Saturday, has raised
$6,250 in old silver coins.
Over 600 people came along to the Sanctuary on Saturday, many clutching jars, piggybanks and ice cream tubs full of coins to donate. The Sanctuary’s conservation team were on hand to talk to people about the work they do to ensure iconic animals like tuatara and kiwi don’t disappear from the wild, even though they will no longer be featuring on our silver coins.
Two local schools – Chilton St James and Eastern Hutt – both raised over $900. The highest individual donor was Kelly Bechtle-Woods of Mt Victoria, who donated over $130 in loose change. As an appreciation of her efforts, Wellington YHA, Regional Wines, DVS Ltd and Crabtree & Evelyn have all contributed gifts.
“I am delighted with the response we’ve had, and would like to thank everybody who has given us their coins. I would also like to remind people that it’s not too late to bring their old coins in, or put them in the collection jars around town. Every cent we receive will go towards the continued ecological restoration of the Sanctuary.” Says Sanctuary CEO Nancy McIntosh-Ward.
