Excellence in host responsibility rewarded

Hastings District Council, in a joint venture with Hawke’s Bay District Health Board and Roadsafe Hawke‘s Bay, has awarded the inaugural Host Responsibility Award to Havelock North pub the Rose ‘n’ Shamrock.

The award recognises excellence in the implementation of good host responsibility practices.

Paddy Steffert of Hastings District Council Community Services Team helped judge the awards and said that the award signifies a change in the relationship between licensees and governing bodies.

“Until now we have been there to monitor and enforce the rules and regulations, this award process gives us the opportunity to work together to encourage and promote a well-rounded view of host responsibility,” said Mr Steffert.

Mr Steffert also believes this process adds a vital positive component to the work all three agencies do to help provide a safer community in relation to alcohol consumption.

The winner of the host responsibility award 2006 is the Rose ‘n’ Shamrock in Havelock North.

They won for their consistent approach to host responsibility overall.

“They weren’t the best in every single category but they were consistent throughout and their attitude was first rate when it comes to being responsible hosts,” said Paddy Steffert.

Each licensee was judged on the provision of low and non-alcoholic drinks, the availability of food, transport options, signage, and staff conduct and training. The judging team also sought comments from police and liquor licensing inspectors during the decision-making process.

The winning pub will be awarded a certificate and $2000 worth of radio and newspaper advertising.

Current funding only allows the award to be gifted annually but the project team is hopeful further funding in the future will allow it to become a twice-yearly fixture.
