If you can’t be good, be careful

If you can’t be good, be careful

October 17, 2006

Guy Fawkes Day has proved to be an explosive issue for politicians over the years and 2006 is no exception as one civic leader renews his call to ban the bang.

North Shore City Mayor George Wood leads the council which, in May this year, asked Government to stop the retail sale of fireworks to the public.

For the North Shore last year, the re-enactment of Mr Fawkes’ pyrotechnics from 400 years before brought city-wide mayhem, he says.

“Fireworks should be restricted to professional displays only.”

George Wood acknowledges the Government’s ‘final warning’ and educational safety campaign, but supports the sceptical view taken by SPCA chief Bob Kerridge.

“It’s not just one day of the year – there are weeks of madness. I feel sorry for the Fire Service and Police who have more than enough to do without dealing with the consequences of legalised explosions.”

Mr Wood is pleading with the public to be considerate this year and follow the safety measures listed on the website www.guyfawkes2006.govt.nz
