Council adopts its 2006 Waste Management Plan

Christchurch City Council today adopted its 2006 Waste Management Plan, which contains targets for the reduction of the waste the city (including Banks Peninsula) produces, and resolved to work towards the implementation of a preferred option for the provision of a kerbside waste collection service (recycling, organics and rubbish).

Staff have been requested to start the necessary planning and project work to ensure the preferred option and infrastructure are in place prior to August 2008 when the current contracts expire.

"Staff will commence preparing documentation for a registration of interest for the project which is planned for release into the market around February 2007" says Council City Water and Waste Manager Mark Christison.

"This interest will then give us a good indication of the options that are in the market. A shortlist will then be drawn up and the Council will start an interactive tender process with those contractors."

At today's meeting, the Council also agreed that the Zero Waste working party should continue to work with staff through this process.
