Incident Type: Roads closed

Weather conditions are starting to cause a few problems in the Arthurs Pass and Hanmer areras.

Arthurs Pass Police advise that there are trees down across the road between Arthurs Pass and Klondyke Corner on SHW 73. There is also about 60 cm of water flooding across the road. Motorists are urged to be cautious in this area and follow the directions of staff at the scene.

The Hanmer area. SHW 7 between Mouse Point and the Hanmer turnoff remains closed to all traffic whilst workers clear several trees across the road, the main area concerned is Marble Point. It is currently to dangerous for roading workers to attempt clearance of the trees. Until the wind settles the workers are remaining in a safe area just south of the scene.

We have no further information on the condition of the male struck by a falling tree at Mouse Point earlier this morning. His condition when extricated from under the tree was described as serious. He is likely to be in Christchurch by the time of this release.

It is timely to remind motorists to travel with caution in these areas and not travel unless they need to at this time. we understand that the tree down across the Ferry Bridge at the turnoff to Hanmer has been cleared and it may be possible for motorists to travel from Hanmer through to the Lewis Pass.
