All Cultures, All Action, All Day

All Cultures, All Action, All Day

Hamilton City’s Waitangi Day Commemoration on Tuesday, 6 February at Innes Common will be a melting pot of colour and cultures as the city’s diverse communities come together for a huge day of family fun.

There will be plenty to see and do with bands, cultural groups, and entertainers performing throughout the day. A highlight is sure to be the return of youth dance competition ‘Freestylz in All Stylz’, which last year attracted large crowds to see talented local youth on show.

A new feature of this year’s event is a Treaty Forum, encouraging reflection about the role of the Treaty of Waitangi through interactive displays of art, theatre, and speech.

Other activities include the Poet’s Corner, food and arts stalls, and a children’s entertainment area with large inflatables, face painting, and giveaways. Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres, and Hamilton City Mayor Michael Redman will be among dignitaries welcomed on the day.

Now in its fifth year, the event is a collaboration between a number of local individuals and organisations brought together by Te Runanga o Kirikiriroa. Other sponsors include the Hamilton City Council, Trust Waikato, Ministry of Culture and Heritage, Maori and Pacific Island Project Fund, Community Radio Hamilton, COGS, Sky City Hamilton, and the Credit Union Hamilton.

The day starts with the flag raising at 7am, and live entertainment from 8am through to the closing ceremony at 5pm.

Entry is free and all are welcome. For more information telephone Te Runanga o Kirikiriroa on 07 846 1042.
