Clean, green and… goats?
Native bush at its very best is on display this Sunday in Clean, Green and… Goats? – a guided walk that shows how native bush has flourished through pest control. The walk is part of Greater Wellington’s summer Regional Outdoors Programme.
Bill Milne, who is leading the walk through the Korokoro Valley, urges people to take the opportunity to experience the incredible variety of bush and birdlife in the area.
Bill has an impressive history of helping to restore native bush around the region. He’s a long time member of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society and his recent activities include pest control with community groups to restore the dawn chorus in the Rimutaka Forest Park and native bush on Matiu-Somes Island.
“Ongoing pest control by Greater Wellington and community groups has had a tangible effort in Korokoro Valley. Before the work started, there was a real problem with possums and goats chewing up native bush. Now the native plants and birds are thriving.”
Bill says the bellbirds, which seemed to have disappeared from the valley, recently reappeared following pest control work.
“I’ll be pointing out any of the native bird species that we come across during the walk as well as the large stands of tawa, kohekohe and rimu in the valley. Participants will also get to see the historic Korokoro dam.”
