Orokonui Ecosanctuary fence nears completion

Orokonui Ecosanctuary fence nears completion

The earthworks for the predator proof fence are now complete. Just a little more work on the fence and on a few culverts and the fence will be closed. An event to mark this milestone will be held at the end of April or early May.

The Ecosanctuary area will then be closed until all pests have been eliminated. Initially experienced ground teams will shoot goats, possums etc. This will then be followed up by poisoning. There will be an aerial drop in the main area and hand baiting of the stream edges and inside the perimeter fence.

Lots of other work is happening too. There have been groups preparing and cleaning seed and pricking out seedlings. Thanks to Blueskin Nursery for space and Les Cleveland for seed. Groups have also been working on the Trust's property, planting and releasing native trees and grasses. If this sort of work appeals to you, ring Valerie Fay on 482 2806 to go on our mailing list.

For further information on the Ecosanctuary see our box at the Blueskin Bay Library, visit www.orokonui.org.nz or come along to our next local meeting on May 16th, 7.30pm at Waitati Hall.
