A sustainable Wellington region
As world concern grows about the impact of humanity’s footprint on the world’s environment, Greater Wellington is looking at the sustainability of the Wellington region as it develops the next 10-year Regional Policy Statement (RPS).
The RPS provides a framework to ensure the region plays its part in maintaining land, water and air quality. It looks to preserve the natural environment and manage "progress" positively while ensuring the region's core resources are protected.
Greater Wellington’s Chairman of the Environment Committee, Councillor Chris Turver, says the RPS is a very important document for the region. Greater Wellington and city and district councils have to give effect to the RPS when managing resources. “It deals with activities that range from promoting quality urban design to setting water quality standards for all rivers, lakes and wetlands, and working with rural landowners to help manage erosion prone land. It’s about looking after the environment for our children and our communities.”
Throughout June, you will have the opportunity to comment on draft content being developed for the new RPS. A summary of this is outlined in the current issue of Greater Wellington’s RPS newsletter. Greater Wellington will use your comments to help develop the proposed RPS. It will be published for public submissions later this year.
