Hamilton Police are reinforcing their message of people looking out for one another and praising the benefits of martial arts training following an attempted abduction in the city overnight.

About midnight two female students walking in the vicinity of the Alexander and Caro streets intersection noticed a silver 2-door car with two men inside parked suspiciously.

As they passed the car they noticed the car follow them, stop and a male passenger get out.

The man then grabbed one of the women by an arm and attempted to drag her into the car.

The woman has fought back and managed to escape the man's clutches.

Senior Sergeant Marcus Lynam said Police believe the woman landed at least one good blow to her attacker, enough to enable her escape.

"We understand she has had some martial arts training," he said.

Both occupants of the car were described as wearing dark clothing and had masks over their faces.

The women describe their attackers' car as being a silver two door 'Porsche' shaped car.

Mr Lynam said Police were looking at links between this car and reports of a silver two-door Nissan Skyline reported as acting suspiciously in the area of Alexander St bars a short time earlier.

"The occupants of this car were described as two male skinheads, one wearing a black hoodie and the car having no rear number plate."

Meanwhile the officer in charge of Operation Phil, the hunt for an alleged serial rapist, Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Page said his team will look into last night's events.

""The Operation Phil team will be taking it into consideration as part of our investigation. We're uncertain if this matter is linked but will be investigating this matter to determine if it is or isn't," he said.
