Hikoi To Parliament Incident Free

Police say some disruption on the roads was the only issue in an incident free Hikoi in Wellington today.

Inspector Peter Cowan, Wellington City Area Commander, says 500 people gathered outside Parliament early this afternoon, with about half the number then marching up Molesworth Street to Police National Headquarters for 30 to 40 minutes.

"We had no real problems, and no arrests were made," he says. "The only issue was delays to traffic, especially on State Highway 1 as Hikoi vehicles travelled into the city, and then in the Lambton Quay and Molesworth Street areas."

"We're acutely aware that traffic disruption frustrates other road users," he says. "Police at all times attempt to divert traffic onto alternative routes but diversions are not always possible. We thank people for their cooperation."

The driver of one vehicle associated with the Hikoi was stopped north of Paraparaumu this morning for driving on the wrong side of the road. He will be issued with a traffic summons relating to his driving behaviour.
