Blueskin Bay visitors' guide launched

Blueskin Bay visitors' guide launched

A new visitors' guide to the Blueskin Bay area north of Dunedin has just been launched. Blueskin Media, a small volunteer community publishing group based in Waitati and Warrington, produced the guide in response to an increase in travellers stopping to explore the area rather than simply whizzing through on State Highway One.

Blueskin Bay has a tiny but growing visitor industry with two cafes, an antique shop and a gallery opening in the past few months. The hospitality industry is also growing, with new homestay businesses in the area.

The aim of the visitors' guide is not so much to attract visitors to the area (more a job for tourism promotors) but to make those who choose to visit feel welcome and able to find theior way around.

The publication is a plain-paper black-and-white booklet and almost all the information was downloaded from the copyright-free Internet sites Wikipedia and Wikitravel. It has been set up to make updates simple and low-cost. A Dunedin graphic artist designed a double-page map of the area.

The Waikouaiti Coast Community Board provided ratepayer funding for the venture.

Copies of the Guide will be available at Blueskin Bay Library and Blueskin General Store, both in Waitati.
