Interior architect revolutionises the art of painting

Walking into Toi Pōneke Gallery’s next exhibition – beautifully crafted works by interior architect Lizzy Vullings – will be like walking back in time.

Many of the works, which range from acrylic on canvas and board to ornate designs on old doors and window frames, have an antique-like effect and timeless quality. The exhibition opens at 5.30pm on Thursday 17 January and runs until Friday 31 January.

Lizzy came to Wellington from Putaruru to study interior architecture at Victoria University, a degree which helped fine-tune her architecture style into her painting work. She says she has always painted since she could pick up a brush.

“I often used painting in my projects throughout my interior architecture degree,” she says. “I’m glad I persevered with this as it has led to a distinct style which is evident in the vast majority of the work that will make up the exhibition.”

The larger canvases in the collection are Lizzy’s personal response to a particular site or idea, often from a Wellington location. She explores the design and function of a building, and incorporates layers of architectural findings into her painting, producing a rich and detailed canvas.

“This involves experimentation through the layering of ideas and different methods of representation including sketching, stitching, notation and collage. I enjoy the unforeseen and often unexpected results that you get from this process of layering,” she says.

Lizzy’s smaller works explore a wider variety of subjects, often with a New Zealand theme, such as native birds and flowers. The works are completed in acrylic on different sized laser-cut boards.

Visitors to the gallery will see canvases on one wall, a variety of small works on another wall, and the decorated doors and window frames suspended from the ceiling of the gallery.

Lizzy worked at Victoria University as a tutor to support her work in her studio at Toi Pōneke. Her work was immensely popular at the studio residents’ art sale last month. Her artworks at the forthcoming exhibition will also be for sale. Prices range from $50 for small works to $2000 for larger works.

One Revolution is on from 5.30pm on Thursday 17 January until Friday 31 January at Toi Pōneke Gallery, Wellington Arts Centre, 61 Abel Smith Street.
