The real Cannons Creek

News release
28 February 2008

The real Cannons Creek
Did you know that Cannons Creek really is a creek, running through Cannons Creek Valley in Belmont Regional Park? This Saturday you can find out more in The Real Cannons Creek, part of Greater Wellington’s summer Regional Outdoors Programme.

“Many people have no idea that the Cannons Creek suburb of Porirua City was named after a creek, or that the creek exists. But it has an interesting history and a pretty good future, thanks to the restoration work of volunteers and Greater Wellington,” says Sylvia Jenkin of the Friends of Maara Roa, an environmental group working to restore the native bush in Cannons Creek Valley.

The Friends will lead participants on a tour of Cannons Creek and its tributaries. “It’s a pretty walk – we’ll take them into the bush and show them the other streams. We’ll look at some ponds and a lovely little waterfall. We’ll also show them the value of the bush and the restoration planting.”

Sylvia says the walk will focus on the creek’s function within its surrounding environment, the human impact on the creek, and how the creek has adjusted over the years. “We’re also hoping that the event will encourage people to think about volunteering to help with restoration work in the valley.”

When: Saturday 8 March, 10am-12pm
Where: By car, exit SH1 at Mungavin Interchange, Porirua City and follow Champion Street to the Cannons Creek Entrance adjacent to the shops. Ample parking available.
Bookings: Bookings essential. Phone Sylvia 04 237 4760
