Free beginner bike sessions a success

March 28, 2008

Over thirty Smales Farm and IRD Takapuna employees enjoyed free beginner bike training last month, as part of North Shore City’s workplace travel plan programme.

The courses consisted of three 1.5 hour sessions, designed to build up confidence for complete beginners or for those who hadn’t been on a bike for some time.

“The sessions were a great success, with a large turnout of enthusiastic participants with a range of abilities, said North Shore City senior travel planner Judith Goodwin.

“The small group environment helped to build up confidence and develop road safety knowledge in a safe and controlled environment.”

“Participants learnt basic road rules, bike safety, and practical riding skills, including on-road riding around Lake Pupuke during the last session,” said Ms Goodwin.

The council aims to continue the successful programme next year as part of the workplace travel plan programme.

Workplace travel plans set out steps to encourage people to travel to and from a workplace by cycling, carpooling, walking or public transport. The focus is on promoting travel choices and reducing single occupancy car trips.
