V8 event review to have independent chair

Hamilton City Council is planning a comprehensive review of the V8 Supercars event, as required under the event Resource Consent, and has decided the process will be managed by an independent chair person.

Hamilton Mayor Bob Simcock says there are sure to be some learnings from staging the event this year and it is important that the process is seen to be as thorough and independent as possible to ensure necessary improvements can be made.

"Although the review will involve a lot more than just Hamilton City Council's role in the event, it is important that the review is carried out at 'arms length' from the council.

"One of the key aspects of the review will be to see if there are better ways to help reduce any negative impacts of the event on the Frankton Business community particularly during the track build leading up to race days."

The Resource Consent requires a review to be carried out within three months of the event taking place.

Included in the information to be considered by a review committee will be traffic management, noise, the track build and dismantle process, information from an economic impact assessment, environmental mitigation and a report from the Community Liaison Committee.

The Community Liaison Committee has been in operation for over 12 months and has been one of the key mechanisms for interacting with the Frankton community in particular.

Mayor Simcock says Council is keen to see the Liaison Committee well utilised in the review.

"Capturing feedback from the people in the immediate vicinity of the event is obviously an important component and we want to make this part of the process as robust and as useful as it can be," says Mayor Simcock.
