Tawa Music Festival gets cash boost

The Tawa Schools and Community Music Festival, in which up to 800 talented young people will perform, has received $4000 from the Council as part of the Tawa Community Grants allocations.

The money will go towards holding a concert at the Michael Fowler Centre on Tuesday 23 September. The theme for this year’s concert is ‘Tawa goes to Town’ and the event will feature song, dance and choral performances.

The concert will include performers from the following schools: Redwood, St Francis Xavier, Tawa, Hampton Hill, Linden, Greenacres, Tawa Intermediate, Tawa Primary and Tawa College. About 100 adults will provide vocal and instrumental backing.

Graeme Sutton, Chair of the Grants subcommittee of the Tawa Community Board, says the festival will be a major event for the Tawa community.

“This festival showcases a lot of young talent in the Tawa area and it’s only possible thanks to a team of dedicated volunteers. However it’s still very expensive to put on an event like this and I’m pleased we have been able to help them out.”

Another grant recipient is the Tawa Teals Leisure Marchers who were granted $400 to hire the Tawa Rugby Club Hall for marching practice. The Teals have nine team members and one reserve. They are all aged between 62 and 84.

Mr Sutton says the grants programme is a great way to support to diverse community groups like the Teals.

Each year the Council administers the Tawa Community Grants which provide $15,000 to groups that benefit the Tawa community.
