Little hands get creative in Queenstown

Queenstown preschoolers and their parents will be offered the chance to get creative with a new weekly art programme starting on 6 May.

Enrolments open today (Thursday 24 April) for ‘Littlehands’, a fun 45-minute workshop for two, three and four year old children where they can explore and develop their creativity by working with a range of art materials. The workshops will be held every Tuesday at the centrally located Art Society on the corner of Ballarat and Stanley streets in Queenstown.

Owned and run by Amanda Robertson, a mum and a qualified primary school teacher with almost 20 years of childcare experience, the programme focuses on the creative process rather than the product, encouraging quality one-on-one time between child and parent.

“It’s so important to encourage a child’s creativity as it helps to refine motor skills, promotes confidence in expressing ideas and decision making and stimulates lateral thinking skills further down the track. Most importantly though, it’s fun,” says Amanda.

In each workshop children and parents will build two and three dimensional art together by exploring and applying a variety of media, including water-based paints, sculpture, drawing, and collage. All supplies are included.

The idea for Littlehands was born while Amanda was looking after some friends’ children. To keep them occupied and stimulated, she organised an art session with them and her own two-year old son, Harry.

“The kids had such a good time that their parents suggested I do it as a business. I love arts and crafts and have always been passionate about working with kids so it’s great to bring the two together.

“Art is quite time-intensive and messy for people to do in their own homes so Littlehands provides a fun and safe environment where making a mess is encouraged.”

Fees are $90 per term with an additional $36 to cover materials. Casual classes are available depending on space at a cost of $14 per class. Bookings are essential.
