Thousands of fat trout in Lake Pupuke

Thousands of fat trout in Lake Pupuke

Fish & Game released 1000 (2-4lb) rainbow trout into Lake Pupuke last Thursday.

When added to the tanker loads of trout released into the lake last year this makes more than 3000 rainbows released into this highly urban lake in just one year.

The 1000 just released are in preparation for a weekend angling competition being run by Trout Unlimited this weekend.

The competition - being held to celebrate the lake’s improved water quality as well as get information about fish numbers, size and condition in the lake - attracts anglers from all over the region.

Lake Pupuke was first stocked with rainbow trout in the 1880s, making it the first lake to be stocked in New Zealand, but as its water quality declined so did its attraction as a trout fishing lake.

Today its water quality has improved dramatically due to Auckland Regional Council environmental work in the lake’s catchment area.

Once again giving Aucklanders a fantastic opportunity to trout fish, although now in a highly urbanized environment.
