Eden Park, your park

If you’re interested in what’s happening in and around Eden Park in the build-up to Rugby World Cup 2011 and beyond, then visit Eden Park next weekend (May 10-11).

An information expo displaying the upcoming works is being held at the Park’s ASB Lounge from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 10 May and Sunday 11 May.

The expo will give the public the chance to view and provide feedback on everything from the stadium’s $240 million redevelopment, which kicked off this month, to the proposed upgrades of neighbouring streets and railway stations.

And there’s plenty of activities at the expo to appeal to sports fans and children.

There will be free ‘behind the scenes tours’ of Eden Park, giving the public the chance to go where the players go. There may also be a chance to kick a goal on the hallowed turf.

Eden Park’s Hall of Legends - boasting a truly unique collection of over 2000 items of cricket and rugby memorabilia - will have free admission during the expo hours.

The expo is a collaborative effort of four organisations - Auckland City Council, Auckland Regional Transport Authority, Eden Park Redevelopment Board and the Eden Park Trust Board.

The projects on display are not only about preparing Eden Park for RWC 2011, but about being ‘good neighbours’ for the long term and leaving a positive legacy for the community. The projects include:

·         The Eden Park Redevelopment Board’s $240 million redevelopment of Eden Park featuring new South and East stands (replacing the Terraces), an extension of the ASB Stand, and the addition of public concourses providing internal pedestrian movement around the Park.

·         The Auckland City Council’s proposed $22 million package of transport and streetscapes improvements in the precinct around the Park featuring the widening of Sandringham Road, the development of key walking routes, and upgrades of Kingsland and Valley Road shopping centres.

·         The Auckland Regional Transport Authority’s proposed upgrade of the Kingsland and Morningside train stations.

Eden Park Trust Board’s general manager Murray Reade says the rationale behind the expo is that residents can come along and find out what’s going on regardless of who is delivering the projects.

“We’ve tried to put together a one-stop shop for the public, so that they can ask questions and meet the people involved in the various projects,” says Reade.

“And to make the expo more of a family outing, we’ve added a few treats such as the chance to see inside the Park for one of the last times before the South Stand comes down.”

The expo is open to the public from 10am - 3pm on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 May in Eden Park's ASB Lounge - access through gate A off Walters Road. Parking inside gate A.
