Radio temporarily unavailable at Mt Vic Tunnel

MEDIA RELEASE

TRANSIT NEW ZEALAND NATIONAL OFFICE

19 May 2008

Radio transmission temporarily unavailable at Mt Victoria Tunnel

Radio transmission in the Mt Victoria Tunnel is temporarily unavailable while Transit builds a new “clean room” for sensitive electrical equipment.

Transit central operations manager Mark Owen says the signal is not currently available as the radio rebroadcast equipment has been disconnected while a clean room is refurbished. The clean room will house some of the tunnel’s electrical equipment in an environment designed to protect it from dust.

Radio transmissions will be available in the tunnel again next month when Transit expect to have finished work necessary to create an environment suitable for this kind of equipment, Mr Owen says.

“We appreciate that the loss of radio signal is an inconvenience, but the upgrade of the tunnel’s facility room will ensure the equipment is protected for years to come. This will secure long-term transmission of radio frequencies for motorists travelling through the tunnel.
