12 June 2008

The bodies of two young men recovered from the top of a railway wagon in a Christchurch rail yard early this morning have been identified

Next of kin are in the process of being notified.

A post mortem will take place however Police believe the deaths are not suspicious.

The two bodies of the men were discovered early this morning by a Toll Rail employee who called police. They were on top of a tarpaulin on a wagon.

"What these two young men appear to have been doing was a very dangerous thing," says Detective Senior Sergeant John Rae. "It was fatal for them.

"The railway business has a lot of dangers attached- even crossing a track; you must be aware of the dangers that exist. Trains are big and heavy and are not easy to stop."
