Investigations Continue Into Suspicious Mail Items

Investigations Continue Into Suspicious Mail Items

New Zealand Police

26 June 2008

Wellington CIB is coordinating inquiries into seven incidents where items of mail inferred by the sender to contain 1080 poison have been sent to addresses in Wellington city and Nelson.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Borrell, Wellington CIB, said two recipients contacted police today following overnight publicity, advising they had been sent envelopes within the last few days.

MAF, Parliament Buildings, the Reserve Bank and the Ministry of Health received items this week. Other inquiries have now established that three similar items of mail were received in Nelson earlier in the week.

Detective Senior Sergeant Borrell said Wellington CIB is coordinating police inquiries into all the deliveries.

"The envelopes and contents are being analysed by a range of forensic experts," he said. "The tests are still being run so it's too early for me to comment on any findings.

"We're liaising with police nationally to let us know about similar incidents."
