Searching for creativity and unique NZ design

Searching for creativity, couture and unique New Zealand fashion design

Emerging New Zealand fashion designers and artists are invited to submit entries in the 2008 Villa Maria Cult-Couture Awards.

Garments entered should demonstrate a unique New Zealand interpretation and explore the limits of haute couture, design and artistry.

Manukau City Council is coordinating the event and Chantelle Whaiapu, council’s Art Events Manager, says, “We’re looking for cutting-edge garments that meet a high standard of design, fashion and cultural interpretation.

“This year Cult-Couture will be the fashion highlight of the new Manukau Festival of Arts”, says Chantelle.

She says this year the bar has been raised for entrants following last year’s exquisite winning garment Tino Glam by Aucklander Shona Tawhiao.

“Last year the judges made a unanimous decision the moment they set eyes on Shona’s garment, which was totally exquisite.

“Remember, it’s the time and care taken that’s important. That and a really great design will make your entry stand out,” says Chantelle.

You can see the beauty of Shona’s winning garment, in the cover shot image that graces this year’s new-look registration form.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsor Villa Maria Estate and other category sponsors GHD, MCC Waste Management, Datacom and Meredith Connell, there is $15,000 in prize money.

The categories are: Recycled Revolution, Formally Yours, Obviously Organic, Flight of Fantasy, Matrimonial Bliss and On the Streets, plus a special award to recognise creative excellence from Manukau designers.
