Storytime With The Mayor

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker entertained pre-schoolers, parents and other library users with a reading of Piggity-Wiggity Jiggity Jig by New Zealand author Diana Neild at the Central Library yesterday.

The reading was part of Library Week’s ever-popular read-aloud event, and occurred at libraries across the country (including 10 other Christchurch libraries) - many featuring special guests doing the reading. All the library readings featured the same book, with its wonderful read-aloud rhyme and rhythm story that trips off the tongue with fun language and sophisticated vocabulary.

Library Week is a week-long celebration of libraries and librarianship in New Zealand and has been celebrated for more than 35 years. It offers a range of activities and displays aimed at helping people to learn more about what libraries can offer and offering an opportunity to celebrate the role of libraries in the community. Library Week continues until Sunday, and more information is available at http://www.libraryweek.org.nz/

“We were delighted to have Bob Parker do the reading at the Central Library and the reaction he got from his audience means we’ll be keen to have him back again,” says Carolyn Robertson, Libraries and Information Manager.

Bob Parker’s reading was also broadcast to customers and staff on all four floors of the library building.
