Students encouraged to be creative with history

Students in the Canterbury region are being encouraged to get creative by design to uncover changes in history as part of Heritage Week 2008.

The South Learning Centre with Christchurch City Libraries are inviting students from years 5 to 13 to go “Back to the future” and submit interpretations of Canterbury’s heritage post 1946.

South Learning Centre’s Danielle Marston, says the purpose of the Youth Heritage Competition is to promote the character and history of the city and to engage students to be involved with heritage activities while increasing their awareness and use of new technologies.

“It’s important we encourage students to have an interest in their cultural heritage and Youth Heritage Competition is a fun way achieve this.

“By using new technologies we feel we can capture their interest which is key to their motivation and active learning.”

The 2008 Youth Heritage Competition requires student’s to use Information Communications Technology (ICT) to design a poster, PowerPoint display, podcast or short film.

Schools and teachers within the region are also being encouraged to support student’s involvement by linking the competition in with their social studies units.

Youth Heritage Competition forms part of the 16th annual Christchurch Heritage Week and aims to raise awareness of our special heritage places, and the importance and benefits of conserving them.

With over 40 prizes to be won, student’s could take home an iPod Shuffle or other great prizes.
