Christchurch residents help minimise waste

Individuals, groups or community organisations can apply for a share of the Council’s Community Waste Minimisation Fund.

Established three years ago as part of Council’s Waste Management Plan the Community Waste Minimisation Fund aims to encourage and assist the community to contribute to the goals in waste minimisation throughout Christchurch.

The maximum amount per application is generally $10,000 from the total available annual fund of $50,000.

The fund recognises that great ideas on how to better manage our waste exist in the community and that there are instances where there isn’t the money to develop these ideas into viable and practical options which would benefit our community.

Such projects might include ways of increasing participation in recycling, reusing and recovering material; research or feasibility studies.

Successful applications in previous years included:

·         Port Lyttelton Waste Management Project

·         Hungary tiger worm farm

·         Creation of a sustainability guide

Applications are required by Thursday 30 October 2008. They will be assessed and awarded in November.
