Wellington Bar Designs Tops

Wellington bars have come out tops at the New Zealand BeST Design Awards. Three major awards were won in the hospitality design section by some of Wellington’s finest and funkiest nightspots at the Awards Ceremony held in Auckland on Saturday.

Good Luck Bar received a Gold Award, Matterhorn a Silver Award and Mighty Mighty picked up a Bronze Award. Alastair Cox, the designer of all three winning interiors, is also the designer responsible for Mojo and Wishbone designs.

Tim Ward, Owner of Good Luck Bar recalls “when Allistar and I were building his first hospitality design on Cuba Street he turned to me and said there will be six of these in the street within two years. In the end it took eight years for that vision to come to life and at the time what is even more astounding, Wellingtons thriving restaurant sector decided to also join the Cuban revolution too. Allistar Cox can see things most architects dream of being able to see”

The BeST Design Awards are a national award programme of the Designers Institute of New Zealand, recognising New Zealand's best graphic, product and spatial design.

CEO for Positively Wellington Tourism, David Perks, says “these latest awards reinforce the message that Wellington offers a quality nightlife experience and that our hospitality industry are consistently providing some of the best experiences in New Zealand”

The BeST Design Awards follow the recent success of Wellington’s Matterhorn named New Zealand's best restaurant in the Cuisine NZ Restaurant of the Year Awards 2008.
