Sewage overflow into the harbour - take care
Sewage has flowed into Lambton Harbour near Wellington Railway Station following a malfunction involving a private sewer main in the area.
Wellington City Council's Acting Infrastructure Director, Maria Archer, says people are advised to stay away from the water in the harbour area opposite the Railway Station and in the vicinity of Glasgow Wharf.
She says Council workers have established that sewage flowed into the stormwater system after a private sewer main became blocked. The sewer was unblocked last evening.
Because it is thought sewage may have been flowing into the harbour in the area for several days, Ms Archer says it's recommended that people stay out of the water in the area. Council staff, working with Greater Wellington Regional Council and Regional Public Health staff, have erected temporary warning signs in the area.
Daily water samples are being taken in the area - however Ms Archer says it is not thought there is a significant contamination problem in the rest of Lambton Harbour. She describes the sewage spill as "relatively small".
