A 20-year-old Palmerston North man was arrested a short time after the incident and will be interviewed this morning.

Police would like to hear from anyone in the Rangiora Avenue area who may have heard or seen anything suspicious late last night or early this morning that may be relevant to this investigation.

Det Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said: "Thankfully incidents of this kind are incredibly rare and hopefully it is reassuring to the community that we have made an early arrest."
