Money available to help Capital’s future stars

NEWS RELEASE
18 November 2008

Money available to help Capital’s future sports stars

Applications are again sought for Wellington City Council grants available in the coming year to help promising young Wellington sportspeople – and their coaches – work towards international success.

Wellington City Council has some $270,000 in funding allocated for a talent development programme for promising young sportspeople in the Capital City through to 2010.

The programme will support up to six talent development projects involving sportspeople in their teens or early 20s – and endorsed by national or regional sporting organisations - with funding of up to $15,000 each year until the end of 2010.

Applications for the 2009 round of grants close on 27 November – and the Council’s Sport and Recreation Engagement Manager, Ken Bailey, is urging coaches and administrators to get applications in.

“We’ve had great success in the past couple of years with some of the sports we’ve supported – this includes the likes of local yachting, diving, netball, triathlon, swimming and hockey.”

The funding and administration of the programme will be managed by the NZ Academy of Sport North Island. It will be used for athlete and coach development in a range of areas including, for example, strength and conditioning, mental skills, coaching workshops, personal development and injury prevention and rehabilitation.

An advisory panel comprising representatives from Wellington City Council, SPARC, New Zealand Academy of Sport North Island, Sport Wellington Region, College Sport Wellington and the New Zealand Rugby Union will evaluate the applications.

Application forms are on the Council website – www.wellington.govt.nz - and should be emailed to Deslea Wrathall – email desleaw@nzasni.org.nz before 27 November.
