Fire restrictions imminent

Fire restrictions imminent

Warm, windy weather and a spate of fire call-outs mean fire restrictions will soon be needed in Hastings District, Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer Paul Hawke says.

“The warm northerly winds we get at this time of year will quickly dry out the ground and can fan fires out of control, so it’s more important than ever to keep a close eye on outdoor pruning and rubbish fires. They should never be left unattended, even for a short time.”

Mr Hawke said conditions were being reviewed regularly with the New Zealand Fire Service, and a restricted fire season was likely to be introduced soon.

“Even when there are no fire restrictions we encourage people to call us on 871 5000 before they light any rubbish or pruning fires, so we know what is going on if we get reports of smoke from members of the public.”
