KAKA Closes West Coast 1080 Petition

KAKA Press Release:

KAKA Closes West Coast 1080 Petition

Karameans Advocating Kahurangi Action (KAKA)–a community group established in January 2008 to address local concern over the broad-scale, indiscriminate use of the poison sodium monofluoroacetate (1080) by the Department of Conservation (DOC) and the Animal Health Board (AHB)–wishes to announce the closure of a 1080 petition circulated on the West Coast.

KAKA is delighted with the overwhelming response by residents of the West Coast and visitors to the Coast opposing the aerial distribution of 1080 by DOC and the AHB. KAKA is in the process of collating the many thousands of signatures and will release the official result of the petition once that task is complete.

KAKA thanks the many business owners who agreed to host the petition. It also thanks those who by signing it have sent a clear, powerful message to the AHB, DOC, National Government and their local Councils – that the aerial distribution of 1080 is totally unacceptable and the practice must end immediately as they are no longer willing to tolerate the associated damage to native fauna, disruption of ecosystems, threat to New Zealand’s Clean/Green/100%Pure” international image and potential danger to human life for people living near 1080 drop zones.

KAKA will continue to work toward genuinely clean, green and pure solutions to pest control and ask that the AHB and DOC do likewise.
