Beckham delights fans

The LA Galaxy, David Beckham and the Oceania All Stars delighted the crowd at Mt Smart Stadium tonight, and an audience across the Pacific and the USA.

Auckland Regional Council Chairman, Michael Lee, was thrilled with the game and the wonderful entertainment that it provided. “The Oceania team was great, I’d be back to see them, and David Beckham was magic!” he said.

Auckland City Mayor John Banks praised this event as another major step toward putting Auckland on the map. “Just weeks ago, we hosted the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, next month the world’s best yachties will contest the new Louis Vuitton Pacific Series in our harbour playground. These events bring economic benefits to the city, but they also bring our people together in celebration.”

The Mayor also praised the impact that the schools training day would have on encouraging participation in sport.

ARC Deputy Chairman, Michael Barnett, highlighted the importance of events in showcasing Auckland to the world.

“The Bringing the World to Auckland strategy is all about breaking the mould to show just what a fantastic place Auckland is. Tonight we have shown that we are great hosts, and that we can deliver great events. We have a fabulous summer of major events ahead of us. Tonight’s game touched a global audience. The next events we host will do the same. That is a critical ingredient to realising the significant economic potential that Auckland has and competing in a challenging global economy.”

 Official crowd attendance was 16,600
