Hamilton City Libraries invite residents to share stories online

Hamilton residents are encouraged to share their stories on a new website designed to act as a community ‘knowledge basket’.

The website, Kete (meaning ‘basket’), is a digital library of arts, cultural and heritage resources, maintained by Hamilton City Libraries and fuelled by content from community groups and individuals – including digital images, videos, sounds, and documents.

Hamilton City Libraries Digital Access Manager Smita Biswas said in order for Kete to be a success, the site requires support and input from the greater community.

“Anyone in the community is welcome to contribute to this website,” she said. “It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our heritage and community content to the world. It is also a great forum for us to leave our mark behind for the future generations.”

Since being launched on Monday, 15 December, a number of groups have already added their stories to the site, including Riverlea Environment Society, Tuhikaramea Kohanga Reo and Jubilee Catholic Early Childhood Centre. Amongst the current entries are personal stories of immigrating to and living in Hamilton, and records of local events such as Balloons over Waikato and the Hamilton Farmers’ Market.

Mrs Biswas said anyone wanting to add their stories can access the required software via the Kete website.

The site is also being indexed by Google, meaning people are able to use the Google search function to locate stories on Kete.
