Two Weeks Remain For Social Housing Consultation

MEDIA RELEASE

Two Weeks Remain For Social Housing Consultation

Two weeks of public consultation remain for the Christchurch City Council’s special consultative procedure on how it will fund social housing.

The consultation is collecting the views of both the Council’s social housing tenants and the wider community.
Nine public information meetings are being held around the city this month - offering the opportunity to learn more and feed back opinions to the Council. Four meetings were held last week, a further two will be this week, and the final two will be held next week. Details of all of the public information meetings are on the Council’s Have Your Say website (www.ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay)

The Council has produced a Statement of Proposal which backgrounds the social housing issues, outlines available options and gives more detail on the Council proposal. There is also a Summary of Information document - summarising the Statement of Proposal. These documents are available from the Council’s libraries and service centres, from its website at www.ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay, or copies can be requested by phoning the Council on 941 8999 (Banks Peninsula residents can call on 0800 800169).

Submissions can be made electronically at www.ccc.govt.nz/haveyoursay, in writing (using the submission form attached to the Statement of Proposal and the Summary of Information or in any other written form). Submitters can also request to be heard by the Council.

“We’ve had a very encouraging response to the consultation so far in terms of people turning up at the public drop-in sessions and the number of submissions that have already been sent in,” according to Michael Aitken, General Manager of Community Services at the Christchurch City Council. “This indicates a strong community interest in social housing.”

The consultation period ends at 5pm on Monday 2 March 2009.
