Step into wonderful walks and
enjoy autumn’s youth
Wellington City Council
libraries, service centres and swimming pools are now
well-stocked with this year’s Stepping Out! brochures –
hot off the press. If you’re a walking enthusiast, or want
to get to know new walking tracks; if you would like to meet
new people or want to improve your exercising habits before
the weather gets colder – the Southern Cross Building
Society Stepping Out! walking promotion month is for
you.
The City Council’s recreation programmer,
Ashley Burgess, says walks and events have been extended to
the wider Wellington region this year, as Hutt City Council
is also involved in the promotion. “That means there’s
an even greater diversity of scenery and more walks to try.
Whether you want to try a social, educational or challenging
walk, I encourage everyone to step out this
March!”
Ashley says this year’s highlights
include an old favourite – a guided walk along the
spectacular Skyline Track (Sunday 29
March).
“It’s an amazing track,” she says.
“It’s a 12km walk from Old Coach Road in Johnsonville to
the summit of Makara Hill. The scenery is particularly
stunning along the ridgeline, and the people running the
walks have some great stories about the historical aspects
of the track.
“But be sure to be reasonably fit
for this one – the walk takes several hours to complete,
and there are some challenging inclines on the
track.”
If you’re into technological navigation
systems – you might be interested in Geocoaching, the
high-tech scavenger hunt on Wednesday 11 March. Gadget
enthusiasts will be able to embark on a treasure hunt using
their GPS (global positioning system)
devices.
Ashley says there are all kinds of walks
to cater for everyone. “We’ve got easy-going walks, as
well as walks on tracks that are tougher on the calf
muscles. There are also walking events such as ‘Round the
Vines’ in Martinborough on 15 March and ‘Walk to Work
Day’ on 18 March. It’s going to be a great month for
people who love the outdoors.”
Most walks are
free or can be done for a small donation.
