Ports of Auckland out and about at festival

MEDIA RELEASE
Wednesday 25 March 2009

Ports of Auckland out and about at community festival

Ports of Auckland is offering the chance to win a family cruise on the Manukau Harbour at Saturday’s Onehunga Community Festival.

Children will also be able to get up close to a 13-metre Holcim cement tanker and take a free ride on the giant Ports of Auckland waterslide.

Also on show at the Ports of Auckland stall will be a thrilling video filmed from the bridge of a 100-metre long ship, the Spirit of Resolution, as it crosses the famous Manukau Bar.

Ports of Auckland has joined with Holcim Cement and Pacifica Shipping to bring the new attractions to this year’s festival.

General Manager Port Services Wayne Mills says the Port of Onehunga is a small facility compared to the Waitemata seaport, but it has an important role to play in the local community and economy.

“Half of all Auckland’s cement comes through the Port of Onehunga, and there is continuing demand for coastal shipping services through the Port.”

“The festival gives our neighbours a great opportunity to learn more about our operations.  It also provides us with a chance to get to know our community better.”

Last year more than 5,000 people attended the Onehunga Community Festival.

“This is a great free day of entertainment and fun for families, and we hope to see thousands of our Port neighbours at the festival again this year.”

The Onehunga Community Festival is this Saturday, 28 March, from 11am to 4pm at the Onehunga Bay Lagoon and park area off Beachcroft Avenue.

There will also be free all-day entertainment, including performances by Scribe and Graham Brazier, a rock climbing wall, waka ama, food stalls and much more.

To enter the draw for the family cruise, festival-goers should visit the Ports of Auckland stall.
