RCCNZ coordinates yacht rescue
The Rescue Coordination Centre NZ (RCCNZ) is coordinating a search and rescue for a yacht believed to be in difficulty 200 nautical miles off the coast of New Zealand
RCCNZ search and rescue officer Tracy Brickles said the centre detected a beacon signal from a point about 200 nautical miles north-west off North Cape around 2.30pm.
The signal came from an Australian-registered beacon, which the centre established was on a 13m yacht with three people on board (2 men, one woman) travelling between Brisbane and Auckland.
RCCNZ tasked a Royal New Zealand Air Force P3 Orion to fly out the position, which departed from Whenuapai about 4.45pm.
The Orion was expected to take about an hour to reach the location of the beacon signal, at which point the crew will endeavour to make radio contact with those on board the yacht and establish exactly what the problem is.
In the meantime, RCCNZ has tasked the container vessel Maersk Fuji, which as at 5.15pm was about 112NM from the beacon’s position, to travel to the yacht. This is expected to take approximately 9 hours.
