CCC Media Release: Sumner slip debris cleared

CCC Media Release: Sumner slip debris cleared

Debri from the weekend slip at Sumner has been cleared today, re-opening the main road into the seaside suburb to two-lane traffic.

Christchurch City Council Transport and Greenspace Manager Alan Beuzenberg says contractors have been on site for the last two days clearing the rock and vegetation which fell from The Spur on to Main Road, reducing traffic to a single lane.

About 100 cubic metres of the cliff face subsided early Saturday morning on to the road, engineers removing a further 70 cubic metres of rock on Monday to stabilise the area.

He says clearance of the slip has also enabled the footpath along the bottom of the cliff to be re-opened to pedestrians.

“Engineers will continue to monitor the site and undertake any further work if required in coming weeks.”
