Top aborists
climb to new heights
Expect some great aerial
antics as the best of the region’s tree climbers head
skyward at the Botanic Garden this Saturday (3
October).
The annual New Zealand Arboricultural
Association Regional Tree Climbing Competition will feature
up to 25 arborists scaling trees up to 20-metres
high.
The arborists will compete across five
disciplines – speed-climbing, work climbing, aerial
rescue, foot locking (climbing up a static line using your
feet) and throw-line (throwing a weighted line high into
trees to secure your climbing line).
The top
climbers (five male and five female) will compete in the
national championship in Blenheim in November for the chance
to represent New Zealand for the world title held in
Chicago, next year.
It’s not all serious though.
There will also be a chance for children to try their hands
at tree climbing between 10am and 2pm. The children will be
under expert supervision and provided with harnesses to
ensure their safety.
The competition will take
place between 8am and 4.30pm and entry is free. To get
there, come along to the West Entrance on Glenmore Street or
follow the signs from the Founders’
Entrance.
Tree climbing is just one of the free
events happening around the Capital this weekend as part of
the Council’s annual Spring Festival. For further
