Amazing Race challenge for local teenagers

ROTORUA  13.11.09: Teenagers: if you think you know your way around the city, are pretty clued-up, and quick on your feet, then the Rotorua District Youth Council has just the challenge for you.

The youth council is saying “see ya 2009” with an Amazing Race on 16 December, and is encouraging local high school-aged people to take part.

Based on the reality TV show, the race will take teams of four across the city, competing against each other and the clock in the ultimate scavenger hunt.

Using only a map and a city bus pass, the teams’ mission will be to find hidden ‘roadblocks’ scattered throughout Rotorua. Once located, they must successfully complete a challenge in order to receive their next clue. The first team to cross the finish line is the winner.

Rotorua District Council youth projects officer Jill Campbell says the Amazing Race is a fun end-of-school event, where participants will become familiar with local streets and businesses, and maybe return over the summer holidays with their families.

The first prize is $600, $400 for second, and $200 for third place getters.

“That’s over $1,000 in cash prizes, which I’m sure will come in handy for Christmas. Along with crazy tasks, loads of laughs, and heaps of spot prizes, this is a fantastic opportunity for local teenagers to unwind after a year’s study.

“The 2009 Rotorua District Youth Council has done a great job this year, and the experience they will gain from organising this event is a fantastic way to finish it off,” says Ms Campbell.

The Amazing Race is happening on Wednesday 16 December and is open to all local 13 to 18 year olds. Earlybird registrations are $20 per team if paid by 4 December. Entries will be accepted from 5 – 11 December at $30 per team.

Entry forms are available from schools, City Focus, Rotorua District Library or online at www.rotaz.co.nz
