Disaster Awareness Week Winner Announced

19 November 2009

The winner of the 2009 “Emergency Ready” competition is Euan and Robyn Heffer of Mt. Pleasant, Christchurch. Euan and Robyn have two children, Samuel (7) and Emily (1). 2009 is the first year this competition has been held.

Euan and Robyn’s house will be made “Emergency Ready” on Saturday, November 21, from 10:00 am – 1.30 pm. The New Zealand Fire Service, St. John Ambulance, Christchurch City Council and Canterbury Emergency Management Office staff members will be assisting the family in making their home emergency ready.

Activities with the family will include:

* Fire services checking all smoke alarms and developing a fire response plan.

* Water and food storage for emergencies and how to create an emergency plan.

* First aid basics with St. John.

“Euan’s entry was chosen because of his answer to the question about why his family should be prepared. He answered that he wanted his family to be prepared so he could assist members of his community. His community attitude, coupled with his desire to protect his family, is why he was chosen as our competition winner,” says Canterbury Emergency Management Office manager Jon Mitchell.
