Summer in Nelson booklets are delivered to city and
Richmond houses next week (Dec 10), with a new look to some
events and a focus on even more community
participation.
Festival producer Sophie Kelly says
all the usual events are there, but the fresh approach
starts with the Canterbury Community Trust Lantern
Celebration on Saturday December 19.
“We are
thrilled to welcome Solar Peak as a new sponsor for this
event - it fits perfectly as we are taking the Lantern
Celebration into the age of sustainability, with no
generators and more emphasis on people making their own
music and their own lanterns,” Sophie says. “Another
change is the Buskers’ Series – it’s now called
Buskerburgoo (after the porridge served on Lord Nelson’s
ships) and it’ll be an amazing mix of acts from around the
word – all at the top of Trafalgar Street with an aerial
trapeze and two nights of an R18 cabaret, as well as our
usual family and street performances.”
Buskerburgoo
runs from Thurs 4 Feb to Sun 7 Feb.
The
community participation event extends to Nelson Opera in the
Park, presented by BioPaints with the support of the Nelson
City Council on Saturday 13 February.
“It is
fantastic this year to be able to offer such a quality event
totally free, Sophie said. “We have a great line up with
contemporary elements and the opera stars, tenor Simon
O’Neill and soprano Anna Leese.”
And while the
opera is free, you need a ticket to enter the secure area.
Pick up at Biopaints (70 Vanguard St), Council offices,
libraries and Everyman Records.
Other programme
highlights include the New Year’s Eve Countdown at the
Church Steps with Tommy and the Fallen Horses and Minuit,
again this is a free event offering a safe option for New
Year’s Eve.
The Summer Movies Al Fresco programme
features Walt Disney’s Fantasia, Marilyn Monroe in Some
Like It Hot and Humphrey Bogart in The African Queen. The
movies screen from January 6-24 in parks from Fairfield to
Decks’ Reserve in Motueka.
There is also Street
Beat throughout January, the Nelson Mail Teddy Bears’
Picnic at Isel Park on January 17, and the South Canterbury
Finance Nelson Trolley Derby rounding up the programme of
events on Saturday 27 February. Budding designers can find
handy tips and online registration at
www.derby.co.nz.
Nelson City Council events are
working Towards Zero Waste and encourage you to bring your
own crockery. Where possible there will be sinks for rinsing
plates and compost stations near food sale areas. Please
take all other recyclables and rubbish home with
you.
Summer in Nelson is produced by the Nelson
City Council as a celebration for locals and an added
attraction for visitors. Summer in Nelson booklets are now
available at libraries, visitor centres and council offices
throughout the region or you can check it out at
